AN ANALYSIS OF NIGERIAN HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS’ USE OF ICT FOR ONLINE LECTURES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract :   

This study investigates the extent to which students of Nigerian institutions of higher learning used ICT for their online lectures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the quantitative survey method, the study used 406 students from three types of higher institutions in Nigeria: Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Higher Education who filled an online questionnaire via Google Form within a six-month period (23rd June 2020 to 23rd January 2021). The study found out that Nigerian students of higher institutions overwhelmingly use ICT especially smartphones (90%) for their online lectures, they preferred Techno and Samsung branded smartphones and also preferred MTN internet services for their online studies. The study also found out almost 50% of Nigerian students spend as much as 4$ for their online lectures weekly. The study recommends that the Nigerian Government should subsidise students who engaged in online lectures during any pandemic and smartphone makers, other than Techno and Samsung, as well as internet providers, other than MTN, should investigate students’ low preference of their brands to improve and attract students to their brands. The study was anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).
